Agfa Healthcare is set to expand its diagnostic imaging capabilities by acquiring a European developer and producer of contrast media, Insight Agents.

Contrast media are primarily used during medical imaging examinations with x-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), either to highlight specific anatomical structures (mostly vessels) or to perform functional imaging.

Paying around 10 million Euro (approx. AUD$17 million) for the acquisition, Agfa Healthcare hopes to enhance their diagnostic imaging business. The company believes Insight's products are a logical addition to their own portfolio of film, chemicals and printers.

The transaction should be complete by the end of 2009.
